__ Take a Hike Day occurs every year on November 17. This year it happens to be our meeting night. How could a hiking club meet on such a night and not hike or not have a hike theme program?
__6:30 pm Hike the Wilderness Walk Tr, starting from the Lakeview shelter. This hike should take 30-45 minutes. Will cancel for heavy rain or wind. Remember flashlights and hiking sticks.
__7:30 pm Club meeting. Program / entertainment will be "Your Hikes". Tell us your most memorable, most favorite place to go, dumbest-ever mistake, etc.
Nov 5, 2017 Dayhike Tappan Lake Dan/Joyce 1:00 pm [ earlier hike time due to daylight saving time ]
_Tappan Lake State Park will be the location of the November 5 dayhike. Due to the time change that day the start time will be at 1:00 pm. We will be hiking the trails within the park and will have several options as to how far or long we can hike. There are about 12 miles of trails in the park that are divided up into 3 or 4 loops. The trails are in very good condition and should be fairly easy walking with moderate ups and downs.
__Tappan Lake State Park is located 30 miles south of New Philadelphia on State Route 250. Take I-77 south to the Uhrichsville/ Cadiz exit, and 250 east. Follow 250 east to Deersville Rd. When you past the dam and first see the lake, it’s about 5 more miles, at the back end of the lake. There’s a Tappan Lake Park sign at Deersville Rd. Turn right on Deersville Rd. and go 3.8 miles to the sign into the park on your right. There are rest rooms in the park near the parking lot. Hoping to see a good turnout. Dinner after hike.... __Program: A visit with John Muir. John Kolar, naturalist from Geauga County, will portray Muir who was instrumental in forming the National Park Service. Everyone welcome.

__Richfield Heritage Preserve (formerly known as Crowell Hilaka) is 336 acres of wonderful treasures. Once the estates of two prominent families (one being famous inventory Kirby—yes, the sweeper) for a hundred years, then a girl scout camp for about 75 years, the city of Richfield purchased it in 2015. Now folks like us are fortunate enough to be permitted to wander the trails and ogle the many historical buildings (including the castle-like Amity House that was owned by the Neal family). There are two lakes, a river, a secret waterfall, a hydroelectric mill, and numerous other sights to behold that you won’t want to miss.

__This month Backpack trip (Fri. 9/29 – Sun. 10/1) is to the West Rim Trail which runs along the Pine Creek (Sometimes called “The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania”). This area is designated as a National Landmark. We’ll drive over on Friday staying at a local State Park. (Drive time from Canton, 5 hr.) On Saturday, we’ll spot a car at the hikes end and start at Barbour Rock Trail then continuing on the West Rim to Seimons Trail to camp. (I’ll get water info to you before the trip.) On Sunday, we’ll head to the car left at Little Slate Run. This trip promises beautiful vistas and fairly comfortable hiking. Saturday’s hike is about 10 miles along the rim and Sunday’s about 3 miles. Please let me know by Monday if you are planning on coming so I can reserve camping Friday.

__Our August 27th hike will be at Ott’s Lost Forest which is a 360 acre tree farm owned by Ron Ott. He grows large white and black oak. We will be hiking on a separate 92 acre area of the forest. We have not hiked this area before.
__We will meet at 2:00 pm at the park and ride parking lot on SR 39 just east of I-77 in Dover, Ohio. The parking lot is on the south side of the road just as you pass under I 77. We will then car pool down to Tippecanoe, Ohio.
__This will be a pot luck dinner after the hike. Please bring a dish to share and your own table service and beverage.

Program: Fellow member Chuck Merkle will be presenting the upcoming Red River Gorge backpacking trip in Kentucky and how electronic devices will be useful.
Aug 6, 2017 Dayhike Buckeye Trail, Mogadore section , Mogadore, Oh Ken/Cheryl)
__Join Ken and Cheryl for an easy 4.5 mile walk on the Buckeye Trail as it follows along Mogadore Reservoir east of Akron, Oh. We will meet at the marina parking area. Since this is a lineal trail we will need to shuttle hikers to the other end of the trail off of Saxe Rd. (parking is limited here). The group can then hike back to the cars at the marina. Expect the hike to be about 2.5 hours.
__The trail is fairly level and mostly follows old road grades. Be warned though that there some sections that are on narrow foot trails with poison ivy along the path. Most of the trail will be in trees and shaded with just a few open (sunny) areas. Hopefully we won't have a beastly hot day for this hike.
__After the hike, for your dining pleasure, we can go to Farmer Boy Restaurant (1324 Canton Rd, Akron) close to SR 224 and SR 91. This is a family style restaurant. Moderately priced. They will reserve an area for our group. And they have pie!

__Come and hike the trails at Wooster Memorial Park. Many spring wildflowers will be blooming, including the large white trillium. We will meet at the main entrance (Spangler Trailhead). Parking is available at the main entrance, with another parking lot located a short distance west of the main entrance off of Silver Road. (FYI: “Friends of Wooster Memorial Park” is also sponsoring a hike on May 7th at the same time.)
__You may want to bring your hiking poles. The hike will be approximately four miles long. The trails are earthen foot trails and are easy to moderate
__Dinner will be at the Green Leaf Restaurant and Drive In (2905 Cleveland Rd., Wooster) following the hike.

___It time again to get some hikes on the calendar for the coming year. Have a hike you would like to suggest? Have a hike you would like to volunteer to lead? Have a favorite place you would like to share? Bring your ideas. Hikes can range from easy walks of a couple of hours to more challenging all day hikes. Backpacks are generally weekend trips but could be longer.
___Our club is fortunate that we have many members that are willing to be trip leaders but new trip leaders are ALWAYS welcome. Would you like to lead a hike but are not sure about being the trip leader? Just say so. It's not difficult. We have many experienced hikers that would be glad to co-lead a hike and be your advisor. This is true for dayhikes and backpacks.
___The great thing about our club is that you will see some of the same hikers year after year and gather knowledge and friendships. There is never a question that if someone needed help on a hike there will be others that would offer assistance. This is in marked difference to many internet groups where everyone is only looking out for themselves.

___The trails at Quail Hollow Park cover gently rolling terrain formed by glacial deposits. There is a variety of different environments from mature hardwoods, planted pine forest, wet bottomlands and reverting farm fields. This former State Park is now being operated by Stark Parks.

___Hike distance: 3 to 4 miles (2-2.5 hr)
Hike rating: easy to moderate. Forecast is for about 50 degrees. With more rain on the way the trails could be muddy especially if we walk on any of the horse trails.

___Program: Hiking the Buckeye Trail by Chuck and Beth Hewett. Club members Chuck and Beth hiked the entire loop last summer 2016. They are the 12th and 13th hikers to walk the entire trail.
___The Hewett's have authored a book about their journey titled "Wandering Ohio". This is the first guide book covering a through hike of the Buckeye Trail. For a preview Click HERE

Jan 20, 2017 Club Meeting at TWC 7:30pm Trip planning for the 2017 season... Dayhikes and Backpacks
___It time again to get some hikes on the calendar for the coming year. Have a hike you would like to suggest? Have a hike you would like to volunteer to lead? Have a favorite place you would like to share? Bring your ideas. Hikes can range from easy walks of a couple of hours to more challenging all day hikes. Backpacks are generally weekend trips but could be longer.
___Our club is fortunate that we have many members that are willing to be trip leaders but new trip leaders are ALWAYS welcome. Would you like to lead a hike but are not sure about being the trip leader? Just say so. It's not difficult. We have many experienced hikers that would be glad to co-lead a hike and be your advisor. This is true for dayhikes and backpacks.
___The great thing about our club is that you will see some of the same hikers year after year and gather knowledge and friendships. There is never a question that if someone needed help on a hike there will be others that would offer assistance. This is in marked difference to many internet groups where everyone is only looking out for themselves.
Jan 22, 2017 Dayhike Quail Hollow (State) Park Hartville 2:00pm (Ken & Cheryl)
___The trails at Quail Hollow Park cover gently rolling terrain formed by glacial deposits. There is a variety of different environments from mature hardwoods, planted pine forest, wet bottomlands and reverting farm fields. This former State Park is now being operated by Stark Parks.

___Hike distance: 3 to 4 miles (2-2.5 hr)
Hike rating: easy to moderate. Forecast is for about 50 degrees. With more rain on the way the trails could be muddy especially if we walk on any of the horse trails.

Feb 5, 2017 Winter Picnic and Dayhikes, Summit Metro Parks, Mingo Pavilion/Lodge, Akron, Oh 10 am to 6 pm
__Arrive around 10:00 am and set up food. Bring a dish to share.
__Shelter has refrigerator, microwave, electric fireplace, heated restrooms right outside pavilion, water
__First hike starts at 10:30 am
__Lunch at 12:30.
__Second hike starts 2:00 pm After hike we'll eat again! We have the shelter until 6 pm.
__Note....Club is furnishing all paper products, plasticware, and drinks (no alcohol permitted)
