May 30, 2015 Dayhike Slippery Rock Creek Gorge, McConnell’s Mill State Park, New Castle, PA
This hike will be for experienced hikers. It is a lineal trial of 6.2 miles following the North Country trail through a designated National Natural Landmark. It is a rugged trail over rocks and roots with a couple of steep ups and downs. We will start from Hell's Hollow and hike to Echert Bridge. There are no short cuts out of the gorge. There are no potties or water along the way. We will not be walking at a fast pace so expect to be out for several hours. Hikers will need to have a well stocked daybag with lunch, snacks and plenty of water, rain jacket and bug spray. Good sturdy footwear is essential. Bring your hiking poles.
We will make an early start to allow for a leisurely pace with lunch stop and breaks and for looking at wildflowers. Because it is a lineal trail we will have to shuttle hikers and cars to the trailhead and Echert Bridge so that will take some extra time. The hike and shuttle could be as long as 6-7 hours.
For a general location, McConnell's Mill is about 10 miles east of Newcastle, PA. It is approximately 95 miles (1.75 hours) from I-77 & SR 62 in Canton, Oh.
This is a good distance to travel for many of you. Plan to meet at the KILDOO parking area in McConnell's Mill State Park on or before 10:30 am on Saturday May 30. We will figure out a car pool and leave for the trailhead shortly thereafter.
Please contact trip leaders Ken or Cheryl if you are interested or have questions. We would like to know ahead of the trip if you are planning to come. That will give us a heads up on how to shuttle hikers. For those interested we will e-mail maps and directions.

Aug 1-2, 2015 Backpack Old Loggers Path LoyalsockState Forest (central) PA rescheduled from June
____Old Loggers Path is a 30 mile loop - we’ll probably be doing only 16 to 18 miles of the northern part - a moderately challenging hike. Thick woods, wild streams, high rocky bluffs, and sweeping vistas over the Loyalsock State Forest and Rock Run watershed. It’s located near Trout Run, which is north of Williamsport - approximately a 5 1/2 hour drive from Canton. A very pretty hike, with some challenging climbs, nice views of the Pleasant Stream and Rock Run valleys, nice camping along streams, and a very nice hike overall. I’ve been over there twice this spring - and really like it.
____We’d drive over Friday late afternoon/evening, camp at Trailhead (either campsite 32 which is at the western end of the route, or at Masden Hikers campsite, which is at the eastern end of the route - depending on how many are going. Spotting a car at one end or the other is about a 3 mile drive, so fairly quick. Saturday, hike clockwise, starting with a good climb at the western end of the loop, getting the nice views that first day from several clear bluffs, and then descending to the Rock Run/Yellow Dog Run camping area. First day is approx 10 miles, plenty of water along this trail. Sunday, continue around the clockwise direction for approx 7.5 miles out to Masden - I’d anticipate being back on the road by early afternoon. A meal probably in the Williamsport area - there’s lots to choose from.
____If we end up with a smaller group (with only one car), I’ve got an alternative plan that’s a loop that does the NW area for a 16 mile loop, with a little bushwacking.
____My Facebook page has pictures from my April 25th hike (with my brother Chris) before the leaves were out. Folks who are interested can email me for info and maps of our trip. I’ll also be at the meeting on the 19th.

Aug 30, 2015 Dayhike and Wade Doughty Creek Gorge, Charm, Oh (Holmes County) -Ken and Cheryl
____This is a trip to one of the more interesting and remote properties owned by the Wilderness Center and has been a late summer favorite for many years. After a glacier formed a dam and lake to the north, water eventually spilled over the dam and cut a 200 foot deep gorge through the sandstone as Doughty Creek found it's way to the south. TWC owns property on the east side of the gorge from the ridge top down to the creek. This is a rugged un-developed area. With only deer trails to follow, it is seldom visited.
____We will take a fairly easy path down along a ravine and then a short somewhat steeper grade down to the creek. We will proceed walking up the creek bed which is lined with large moss and fern covered sandstone rocks. Much of the streambed is flat bedrock with only ankle deep water (this time of year) but expect some muddy areas and maybe a couple of knee-deep pools. At the north property line we will have to leave the creek and make our way up a 300 foot long and steep hillside to get up to the trail back to the cars. This is a strenuous climb but can be done slowly. Good footwear will help. The hike is short ( just 2 miles ) but the goal is to have a slow paced walk up the creek. We will be out about 2.5 hours.
____Bring hiking boots for the walking and some old shoes for wading. NO bare feet! If you have some old hiking boots or very sturdy shoes you don't mind getting wet that would work well also. A change of clothes might also be a good idea in case you take an un-planned fall into the creek or plan to sit in the water. Also note...this is a wild area. Expect some poison ivy, nettles and an occasional briar. Bare legs/ankles are not reccommended for hiking on the trails.
____Meet at 2:00 pm in the lower parking area of Guggisburg Cheese just north of Charm, Oh (Holmes County). From State Route 62 between Millersburg and Berlin take SR 557 south 2.5 miles to Guggisberg Cheese. SR 557 is 5 miles east of Millersburg and 1.5 miles west of Berlin. G.C. is open on Sunday 11 - 4 pm. There are restrooms inside the store. We will need to car pool to the trailhead (about 2 miles away). Parking here is limited to 6-7 vehicles. I will have a key to open the gate.
____Dinner afterward will be in Millersburg at Bags Sports Pub which is across the street from the BP station and the courthouse. Park on street. Menu at http://www.bagspub.com/ It's about 15 minutes away from Guggisberg Cheese.

Sep 5-6, 2015 Clarion River Canoe Trip Cooksburg PA (Charley Daigen) (Rescheduled from July)
Event was cancelled again do to low water.
___This year on our third annual canoe / kayak overnight trip, we will canoe 30 miles on the middle section of the Clarion River. This portion of the Clarion is characterized by deep pools and areas of shallow water with a moderate current. Much of this portion of the river carries the state designation as being a “Wild and Scenic” waterway. With luck, we will see many kinds wildlife as have on past trips. This is considered a "family" paddle trip meaning that no technical experience is needed other than having basic canoe paddling skills.
___Meet at Cook Forest Canoe Rental in Cooksburg, PA no later than 7:30 am on Sat July 11. Sign in and pay. Cost is $42.50 per person ($85 per canoe) for the weekend which includes our Sat night camping fee.
___We will start 30 miles upstream of Cooksburg, PA, paddling downstream approximately 15 miles and spending the night at a "primitive" campsite owned by Cook Forest Canoe Rental. On the following day we will continue our trip by paddling an additional 15 miles downstream, arriving in Cooksburg. We will do this trip rain or shine. (( note....this is a short trip description. Please refer to Charley's e-mail sent to members or call Charley.))

Sept 13, 2015 Dayhike Honey Run Highlands Park (Knox County), Millwood, Oh 2:00 pm (Forest)
____At 348 acres, Honey Run Highlands Park was purchased by the Knox County Park District in 2010. The trails through these rolling hills are a combination of mowed grass and single track through woods. While hiking, I encountered deer, woodchuck, turkey, squirrels, a few friendly chipmunks, and a variety of birds. There were wildflowers everywhere. A sixty acre tall grass prairie is surrounded by wooded areas. I would rate this 5-mile hike as moderate because you are usually going up or down the hills, but it is a very nice hike.
____The parking lot where the hike will start is a little over a mile from Rt. 62: 10855 Hazel Dell Road on the right. (Note: if coming on 62, you can turn directly onto Hazel; if coming on 36, you must use Bridge St to either get on 62 or go to Hazel.) There is a porta-potty but no water. Across from the parking lot is the Honey Run Waterfall with more parking available if needed. The 25 ft. waterfall is quite picturesque and worth seeing, but if you want to take the short walk to see it, please do so BEFORE the hike, unless you don’t plan to eat with us.
____Dinner at Spearman’s. This small restaurant used to be a full service gas station and garage, and while it is still the small town’s gas station, the building has been converted into a restaurant. It’s not fancy, but they have a decent menu and quite a good selection of homemade pies. Hope to see you there. -Forrest
